Remington, Thomas, compiler? "Hiwell Taptoe for Lords Day Evening." [Unbound signature containing tunes for the fife. Warwick, RI, c. 1778. May be continuation of William Williams manuscript, above.] Pp.18. Harris Collection. Brown University, p76 Wa863p 3.
There is some evidence to suggest that this signature is a continuation of the Williams MS, above. The stitching, orientation and trimming of the signature matches those bound in the Williams MS, and it is likely that one hand penned entries in both manuscripts (see, for example, the harmony entitled “Bass Chester Hiwell’s Taptoo for Lord’s-day Evening” entered near the end of the Williams MS and a similarly titled melody, the second entry in the Remington MS.)

1779?   C104  Treat MS, 1779.

1780    C111 Drum MS, 1780.
"Drum Beating." [England, c.1780] 43 lvs. Shaw-Hellier Collection 287, University of Birmingham.  See entry for The Young Drummer’s Assistant, below.

1780?   C102  Longman Drum, 1780
The Young Drummer's Assistant. London: Longman & Broderip, [c.1780]. Pp.13. Birmingham University, Birmingham B15 2TT. (formerly U12, unlocated).
Similarities in content, sequence and notation style suggest that this publication was available to the compiler of the Drum MS, 1780 above.  However, there is no specific indication of when The Young Drummer’s Assistantwas published, save for the known activity of the publisher’s partnership (1776-1798). During this time Longman & Broderip were located 26 Cheapside in London; however, in December 1782, they occupied a second location as well at No. 13 Haymarket.  The omission of a Haymarket reference on the title-page of  The Young Drummer’s Assistant indicates a publication of 1782 or earlier, a date that corresponds to the ca. 1780 date suggested by watermarked paper of Drum MS, 1780.

1780    A77  Longman Fife, 1780.
Entire New and Compleat Instructions for the Fife. London: Longman and Broderip, [c.1780]. Pp. 36.   Library of Congress, MT356.C62 Case.  Warner 140.

Root, Patriot's Daughters (New Haven: Connecticut Chapters, Daughters of the American Revolution, 1904).

1781    S12  Brown, N. MS, 1781.
Brown, Nathaniel, compiler. “Nathl Brown Fife Major of the fourth Connt Regt  His Book  Drawn Septr 24h 1781.”  [Commonplace book containing tunes for one, two, and three fifes.  New York, 1781]. Pp. 49 lvs. New Haven Colony Historical Society. Daniel Read Papers.  Box 5, Folder G.
Location corrected from: Verplancks Point, [NY and Durham, CT.]

1782    A445    Fife MS, 1780
Fife, John, compiler. [Copybook. Perthshire, Scotland and America, 1780-1804.] Pp. 264.  Cameron Family Collection. Microfilm at National Library of Canada 23,K4.

[1785    A7   Greenwood MS, 1785.
Greenwood, John, owner. “John Greenwood, Fife Major in the Army of the United States.” [Massachusetts?, 1785?].  Pp.87 lvs. New York Historical Society, Manuscripts, Mus.
Isaac J. Greenwood, grandson of the John Greenwood who once owned this manuscript, surmised in The Revolutionary Services of John Greenwood (New York, 1926, republished as A Young Patriot in the American Revolution, Westvaco, 1981)  that this document might represent a book of fife tunes given his ancestor “by an English fifer,” possibly “a memento of the battle of Trenton” (December 26, 1776).  This is unlikely, since there were no English (or British) troops present at Trenton, only German mercenaries. Furthermore, there is no internal evidence to suggest a military provenance—there are no camp duties, no martial titles and no military-oriented marginalia.   Rather, the seven marches entered in the manuscript are amidst a preponderance of dance and song airs, including fourteen titled minuets.  This would suggest that this collection represents the genteel social interests of the mid 1780s rather than the functional duties of a military fifer during the Revolution.]

[Tyringham, Massachusetts?, 179?]. 8 lvs. Old Sturbridge Village, 1967.44 MUS.
While the content dates from the 1770s, recent research indicates the compiler may be Abel Joslen, b. 15 May 1772 in Tyringham, Massachusetts.  The "Abel Joslen / of  Thompson, CT" on the first leaf is a later inscription.
