Physics Pholk Songs, and other Scienterrific Ditties is a CD by David & Ginger Hildebrand briefly out of costume! Here's a whimsical collection of songs about scientific theories, logic, and pure fun. Associated activities for teachers, parents, and students grade 5 through college level are downloadable for free on the internet. Includes Tom Lehrer's "Elements," Python's "Galaxy," "Bricklayer's Song," and ten others, many brand new.
Since 1986, members of the Activity Based Physics Group have been experimenting with more effective and interesting ways to teach by replacing formal lectures with interactive demonstrations and laboratory-based activities. The Group, consisting of several high school and college teachers, has been developing curricular materials and computer tools which will help students to learn by doing. In Workshops Physics, one of our activity-based programs, we have found that playing "The Bricklayer's Song" and Flanders and Swann's "First and Second Law" has been a marvelous way to engage and delight students. Creating assignments to go with these songs gave students an opportunity to test their understanding of new ideas in a rigorous way. Folk songs are an important part of the heritage of any culture including that of scientists and their students. Thus, we were excited when the National Science Foundation gave us a small grant to produce a more extended collection of educational songs and related assignments. (Booklet insert)
RELATED ACTIVITIES ON THE WEB
We encourage owners of this CD to visit the Activity Based Physics/Workshop Physics website and download the educational activities that accompany this CD. You'll find some of the assignments appropriate for college-level physics classes, others will work in high-school classes, and there are even a few activities for younger kids. It's an ever-expanding Universe of thinking fun!
